Stromajer's Wave table is a testament to the designer's ability to create original 3D structures using simple geometric forms. The table's design, which resembles pyramid stairs and waves, provides a new visual experience from every angle. Despite being a static object, it gives the impression of dynamic motion through the fan-like rotation of its parts. This unique attribute is further enhanced by the fact that the table does not contain any fittings or stiffenings, embodying a perfect balance between angularity and softness.
The Wave table was made of ash wood, with a natural colour varnish applied to its surface. The wooden structure and the large tempered glass top meet only on a thin surface, creating an effect of lightness and airiness. This was achieved without the use of any fittings or stiffenings, further emphasizing the table's unique design. The bright natural colouring of the wood balances the stability and rigidness of the angular forms, providing a harmonious blend of aesthetics and functionality.
Stromajer's design process involved extensive research in modular design and paper folding techniques. The designer experimented with smaller parts, modules, and skids to create a more multiple and novel object. The challenge was to find the precise joining points and the object’s fulcrum, and to place the glass top exactly horizontally. The balance between the angular shapes and the lightness of the object was also a key consideration in achieving the table's harmony.
The Wave table was designed and constructed in Budapest, with the project starting in February 2016 and finishing in September 2016. The design team included joiner and constructor Miklós Sárácz and assistant, coordinator, and adviser Melinda Kalcsó. The table's design and execution are a testament to the team's technical skills and creative vision.
Stromajer's Wave table is a remarkable piece of furniture that combines opposites in many ways. It displays man-made and natural forms at the same time, and its softness counterparts the angularity of the structure. The table provides a new visual sight from every angle, symbolizing the variety of nature. Its award-winning design is a testament to Stromajer's creativity and innovation in furniture design.
